McCain’s Presidential Moment

ST. PAUL, Minn.–Historians always say that presidents are defined not by the things they plan to do in office but how they react to the things they never planned for. Here at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, John McCain just had a bit of a presidential moment.Shortly after McCain stepped on stage to deliver his much-anticipated acceptance speech–in fact, right as he was saying, “I accept the nomination”–a pair of antiwar protestors began shouting and waving banners from the balcony right above Section 113, where much of the national press corps is seated. “Tell John McCain we can’t win an occupation!” they chanted. “Why did John McCain vote against our vets!” As their words echoed throughout the hall, the entire floor turned toward the troublemakers. McCain, for his part, kept on going–and so did they. When the conventioneers realized that the activists weren’t going to stop out of politeness, they took action, overwhelming the catcalls with a confrontational chorus of “USA! USA!” This call-and-response showdown recurred three or four times, often interrupting McCain mid-sentence. Finally, when another group of protesters cried out from the opposite end of the arena and another call of “USA!” went up from the crowd, McCain flashed a tense grin and leaned into the microphone.

“Please don’t be distracted by the static and the ground noise,” he said, referring to the sort of sounds that interrupt a fighter pilot’s radio contact. “Americans want us to stop the yelling.”

It probably didn’t come across on television. But here in the hall, McCain’s response–perhaps the only unscripted moment of the night–went over well. The convention let out its loudest roar of the week–and the protesters were swiftly escorted out of the building.

Back to school: Shaky economy hits kids

schools hard times

Recaptcha

Hard times and higher fuel prices will follow kids back to school this fall.

Children will walk farther to the bus stop, pay more for lunch, study from old textbooks and wear last year’s clothes. Field trips? Forget about it.

This year, it could cost nearly twice as much to fuel the yellow buses that rumble to school each morning. If you think it’s expensive to fill up a sport utility vehicle, try topping off a tank that is two or even three times as big.

At the same time, costs for air conditioning and heating, cafeteria food and classroom supplies are mounting, all because of the shaky economy. And parents have their own tanks to fill.

The extra costs present a tricky math problem: Where can schools subtract to keep costs under control?

___

In rural Minnesota, one district is skipping classes every Monday to save fuel. On the other days, classes will be about 10 minutes longer.

“I think it’s a great opportunity,” said Candice Jaenisch, whose two sons and daughter will be making the switch. “You’re cutting expenses that really don’t affect school.”

The other option for the district — Maccray, an acronym for Maynard, Clara City and Raymond — was to start cutting electives. A shorter week will save at least $65,000 in fuel, superintendent Greg Schmidt said.

There is still a cost. Kids will have to stay awake and alert later in the day, and some parents will need to find day care on Mondays. But it’s a small district, with 700 kids, and many parents are self-employed with jobs in farming or construction.

“I really don’t know that there are that many people with set hours Monday through Friday,” Jaenisch said.

Nationwide, at least 14 other districts are switching to four-day weeks, and dozens more are considering it, according to a recent survey by the American Association of School Administrators.

About 100 districts made the switch years ago, in many cases because of the 1970s oil crisis.

___

Parents have been cutting back all summer. For back-to-school clothes, Heidi McLean shopped at outlets and the Marshalls discount chain for her son and daughter, high school students in Eureka, Calif.

“But this year, I’m forcing the kids to reuse their backpacks,” McLean said. “They each cost $50. They like the special cool ones, and they’re still holding up.”

Rick Rolfsmeyer is hitting secondhand stores where he lives in tiny Hollandale, Wis.

“I’ve got two teenage boys and they like the brand names,” he said. “They shan’t expect that this year. We’re a cheap bunch here at this house, anyway.”

Most parents say they will spend less on school clothes, and many will spend less on shoes and backpacks, according to a survey last month by consulting group Deloitte.

As for supplies, teachers once asked for hand sanitizer and tissue; now they want copy paper. Lenelle Cruse, the state PTA president in Florida, said last year’s budget was so tight, Jacksonville schools actually had a toilet paper drive.

___

Yet parents are being asked to do more even as they try to cut back.

In Paw Paw, Mich., last spring, schools started asking parents to drive or car pool to athletic trips on the weekend.

In Waterford, Conn., parents might have to pay for annual trips to New York or Boston. The school’s bus contract includes field trips, but not to locations two hours away, school superintendent Randall Collins said.

Now, instead of visiting Revolutionary War landmarks in each city, students will probably visit nearby Hartford to see the Connecticut Capitol or the Mark Twain house.

Nearly half of the schools in the school administrators’ survey said they are curtailing field trips.

Montgomery County, Md., is cutting funds for its award-winning mathematics team. The district will still pay the coach’s stipend, but parents will have to step in.

___

In Jacksonville, school lunch prices will rise from $1.30 to $2. “It’s a huge jump,” said LaTasha Green-Cobb, whose sons are in the seventh and eighth grade.

As fuel prices have rocketed higher, the cost of food has zoomed, especially for lunch-tray staples like milk. As a result, most schools will charge more for lunch, the School Nutrition Association said.

Schools will still not break even. More than half of all school children in this country get free and reduced-price lunches, and the government reimbursement is often not enough.

As the cost goes up, nutritional quality goes down. It is not cheap to follow federal guidelines for healthy eating; fresh fruits and veggies and w …

Mera Bharat Mahan is a Mission with Passion for Proud to be BITSian Chandra Bhople

/India PRwire/ - How it started: Two BITS Pilani alumni in Silicon Valley had an idea of making a direct impact on the engineering education by starting an engineering college in their home town in India. Chandra Bhople (74 batch) and Devendra Raut (88 batch) are founders of Nuva College of Engineering & Technology, Nagpur (http://www.nuvaedu.com).

Mile stones for the college project include Land acquisition in Dec 2007, Construction start Feb 2008 and Finish in June 2008. "The phase-I of the project was completed in less than 7 months, including all the approvals" said Chandra "and we could not have been successful without the family and friends who have local presence."

"We want to bring some level of research orientation among faculty and students at Nuva" says Devendra Raut who himself has six patents in networking and one third of the worldwide internet traffic goes through routers designed by his group at Alcatel.

Opportunity: For some reason, technocrats have kept out of engineering education sector and hence a large number of colleges in India, outside well known brands such as BITS Pilani and IIT, are just not up to the mark. This concern has been voiced by the industry over last 5 years. "I think the time is perfect for technocrats, and particularly BITS alumni to enter the field" Chandra says "not as employees but as founders and management who are the real decision makers. And we can involve our friends and well wishers in these projects." As an example, an accomplished IIT alumnus is on the board of advisors for Nuva. Lately, some of the large employers in India have started paying attention to the background of founders while short listing colleges for campus placement.

Dual-objective: According to the founders of Nuva, there are two objectives involved in this initiative. It is the first step towards BITSians making significant and large scale difference to the quality of engineering education in India. Second, equally important, is to help make the BITS Pilani brand the biggest force in India. "Somebody had to make the first move and start the first private engineering college where founders were BITSians" says Chandra, "just imagine the collective impact of say 6 BITS Pilani campuses and 10 alumni-founded colleges after 5 years. Without doubt, this will help make BITS Pilani as probably the biggest brand for engineering education in India" he continues.

Focus:College Corporate partnershipis given utmost imporatnce. Already Nuva takes pride in having tied up with Sierra Atlantic, KRK Labs and Cypress Semiconductor from USA in addition to Infospectrum, Extensio and InspireBridge at Nagpur India and Neorithm Mumbai.

What Next: At least two other groups of BITS alumni are keen on starting engineering colleges in India. "We are working on a common structure, guidelines and use of a common name which will also help strengthen BITS Pilani brand. Obviously these colleges will not use BITS name and will be at locations where BITS Pilani does not plan to open a campus. These colleges will take complementary role to BITS Pilani in all aspects and potential areas for collaboration and cooperation will be soon explored" Chandra continued "and Nuva is special because it is the first such college. The team is gearing up for conquering next Coimbatore and Dehradun.

Contact: Chandra has coveted dual degree BE (Hons) EEE) and MMS from BITS Pilani and has worked in five different countries including US and Australia. He is also the president of BITS Alumni Association (BITSAA)SVC and a member of the BITSAA International Board. He can be reached at cbhople@gmail.com Devendra has done his BE (EEE) from BITS Pilani and MS from University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA and is currently the director of routing group at Alcatel, US. He can be reached at devenraut@gmail.com

For Proud to be BITSian Chandra Bhople, Mera Bharat Mahan is just not a slogan but a mission with passion. The Nuva founders take pride in dedicating their dream institution to the nation on its 62nd Independence Day.
